Interviews with some of the leading marimba artist-teachers from the 20th century. Topics include opinions on teaching, performing, how and what to practice, taking competitive auditions, repertoire selection, health and more. This book includes what students learned from early teachers including Musser, Bethancourt and Hiroaka. A follow up book, with more artists, is in progress. Interviews were conducted by Greg Giannascoli with a foreword written by William Moersch.
Hunter Gross is an American percussionist, chamber musician, and educator based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Garnering recognition as a performer early in his career, Hunter has had great success in national percussion competitions. Most recently, Hunter took first prize in the Keyboard Division of the 2020 Percussive Arts Society International Convention Solo Competition with his virtual performance of Yasuo Sueyoshi’s “Mirage pour marimba”.
As a vibrant contemporary percussionist, Hunter has joined the stage and collaborated with some of the top new music ensembles internationally, most recently with the renowned contemporary chamber ensemble, the American Modern Ensemble in Saratoga Springs, New York. Hunter continues to push the boundaries of classical percussion through his ongoing collaboration and consortium projects with esteemed new music composers namely Molly Joyce, Steven Snowden, and Brian Mark.
In addition to being an active artist with the Heartland Marimba Organization, Hunter is also involved with several professional organizations including the Percussive Arts Society, the Roots and Rhizomes Mentorship Project, and the PAS Student Committee. Hunter holds degrees from the University of North Florida and the University of Oklahoma and is presently a freelance percussionist and educator in the Oklahoma City-area. He is the current Percussion Director for Chickasha Public Schools and holds the position of Adjunct Professor of Percussion at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma.
