CONFERENCE SYNOPSIS: Following extensive training through Heartland Marimba's Composer Laboratory and Festival the HM Quartet received several incredible compositions from the young composers participating in the workshop. The Composer LabFest was created in 2021 during the pandemic to offer a training program for composers to receive in-depth instruction about writing for the marimba. There were 13 composers from around the world participating in the first edition and after more than 30 hours of online sessions, a series of private lessons, and read-throughs/workshops on the new compositions, Heartland Marimba still performs several of those works. In fact, four of the quartets are published by HM Publications and will be performed by the HM Quartet for The Space Between IV. Those pieces include Safety in Numbers by Matthew Coley, Lost Forty by Erika Malpass, Into the Hive by Yuta Tanaka, and Machinations II by Ian Wiese. We will also perform Fugue V in F Minor (op. 35) by Felix Mendelssohn. Visit www.heartlandmarimba.com/ and www.heartlandmarimbapublications.com/ for more information.
